Chapter Eight

THE CHORUS OF BOOS ringing through the Frenzy stadium hit harder than the opposing team's bull of a running back. Everson shook his head in disgust as he walked off the field. With the whole nation watching on Monday Night Football, nothing had gone right. They were an embarrassment, losing 42-3 to a division rival.

Their only points had come from the kicker.

Six interceptions didn't help things either.

Everson pulled off his sweat-soaked jersey and heaved it into the bin. No one was talking. Everyone was probably too stunned, frustrated, or embarrassed. Or all three.

Coach Upshall stood in the middle of the room. "I don't know if there's anything that I can say that you guys aren't thinking. We got our asses kicked, plain and simple. Wednesday morning, I expect to see all you guys on time if not early. Other than that, I have nothing to say to you." His tone dripped with disgust. Shaking his head, he strode out of the room.

Before anyone could move to the showers, Tyson Williams stood on the bench, and the quarterback called for everyone's attention. "Listen up. I'm calling a players-only meeting for tomorrow morning. Nine o'clock. Right back here. Don't air your frustrations out to the media tonight with the interviews. Don't give them any more ammunition than a 42-3 score already does. We'll get everything out in the open tomorrow."

Everson didn't want to talk to the media at all. After his shower, he kept his head down and put on his fiercest scowl, trying to discourage anyone from talking to him. For the most part, it worked. The reporters were far more interested in talking to Tyson and Dion and Brady and Xavier. He winced, listening to the reporters trying to coax more answers out of the players. But the players mostly held to not calling out their teammates.

He turned toward the door, thinking he could sneak out a few minutes early. Xavier fell in step by his side. "Brutal loss today."

"Yep." They left the locker room and didn't talk again until they bade each other good night in the parking lot.

Mood black, Everson drove to Ryan's home. A week had passed since he'd walked into the watery mess at his house. The restoration company had found evidence of mold in the kitchen ceiling and under the stairs. Most of the house had dried out, thanks to the industrial dryers running nonstop for seven days. He needed drywall replaced in the kitchen ceiling, a large area of the wooden floor planks on two floors replaced, and an electrician to rerun some wires. The general contractor Shane had recommended was slated to begin work in the morning.

He needed to eat and then find any game highlights available so he could start analyzing his mistakes. Ryan was in the kitchen when he got home. From his gentle smile and the sympathy in his gaze, he'd obviously watched the game. "Hey."

"Hey." Frustration flowed through him the more he thought about the mistakes on the field.
